When it comes to high-handed idolatry like the golden calf, the presenting sin is never the root sin. Israel didn't demand a golden calf because they wanted new gods, they wanted new gods because they wanted to get frisky with the ladies, and Jehovah was kind of strict about that sort of thing. In order to satisfy their desires, they were more than willing to establish lies about history in order to justify their idolatry and subsequent lust. "Moses brought us out of Egypt (v. 1), actually, it was this thing, this cow brought us out of Egypt!" (v. 4)
Worship of the true God necessarily involves a clear and accurate picture of history, because all of the central claims of Christianity are historical. Conversely, you can be sure that whenever someone starts rewriting history, there's high-handed rebellion against the true God afoot, and that rebellion is likely sexual. So when a globalist communist, or an evangelical pastor, start insisting that America was never a Christian nation, you should start looking around for the golden calf and the dancing ladies, or dancing men dressed as ladies as the case may be.
